Why are you running for Dedman I Senator?

I believe that the quickest way of becoming a part of any campus is by serving a role in a key organization. As a Dedman I Senator, I could be given the opportunity to impact SMU early in my collegiate career. I also feel that I have a duty to give back to the SMU community by serving as a Senator.

What do you hope to accomplish as Dedman I Senator if you’re elected?

As a Student Senator, I wish to accomplish one major task: represent my classmates and peers as well as possible on one of the universities governing bodies and make sure that their voices and concerns are heard. I hope to do my best to solve any issue that is bothering or troubling the student body, and make sure that everyone understands that the power rests with the students; Student Senators are merely a channel of communication between the wants and needs of the average student and the power of the figures of authority at SMU.

Why should SMU students vote for you?

Other than the fact that I have tiger blood and Adonis DNA, I am very committed to bettering the lives of students and faculty on campus. I will persistently push for any issue or concern voiced to me by the SMU students and make sure that it is adequately addressed.

What’s your favorite thing about SMU?

My favorite thing about SMU is being around such a welcoming and loving community. Dallas Hall is pretty cool too I guess.

What, if anything, needs to change at SMU?

There is no shortage of events that are promoted and hosted by individual organizations. However, there is a lack of inter-organizational events. I would propose the creation of a committee whose specific responsibility is to unite representatives from individual organizations and put on events that include all of their respective members.

Why are you running for Dedman I Senator?

Although my track record depicts me as an exclusive advocate for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community, I am also an advocate for SMU students in general. I am not running just to be another vote; I am running to do more than that by working hard in solving the issues of the student body and to hold myself, others accountable of their job to represent the students of this University.

What do you hope to accomplish as Dedman I Senator if you’re elected?

Along side with addressing the specific issues of Dedman I students, I plan to work with others to pioneer policy implementation in creating the necessary change needed for the LGBTQ community on campus.

What’s your campaign slogan (if you have one)?

From Harvey Milk to Harvey Luna. Vote for Progress Now!

Why should SMU students vote for you?

I have been in student government for 9+ years serving in many leadership roles that have allowed me, and the people I worked with, to create change. Change is founding a new student government with a new constitution and bylaws. Change is a student that sits down with administrators to discuss grading policy. Change is a gay student that voices the concerns of a community in a time when doing so is unconventional. This, however, is not why SMU students should vote for me. They should vote for me because I have their best interest at heart, that I genuinely care about their academic or personal struggles, and that I have been working for change in Student Senate as soon as I started in the fall and will continue to do so on their behalf if elected.

What’s your favorite thing about SMU?

Apart from the general greatness that this institution is, there is nothing better in SMU than the students I get to work with on issues that matter to them.

What, if anything, needs to change at SMU?

There are many things that need to change in SMU. From housing and medical issues to institutional and LGBTQ issues, there are too many details to mention that can be improved, especially when addressing these issues from a senator’s position. The mentality of some of our current student senators that don’t take all student’s best interest at heart or simply are in Senate to put something on their resume, here is what I have to say to the students in changing this problematic mindset: “If you’ve been that one person who feels out of place in a crowd and feel like no one cares, or believe that student government politics is incapable of being an agent of change, or that people genuinely don’t care about the issues, I am here to dispel that notion. If a student is struggling, I care about that person even if that person is not my friend.  For those who voice their issues that may not appeal to the majority, I care for that person’s issues even if it doesn’t pertain to me. It’s this fundamental belief that I am my sister’s keeper and my brother’s keeper that makes SMU a great place, a place that is unifies and works for a common goal.”

There’s too many great things to narrow it down to one!
